Psychic cost on loses differ between sexes

It’s interesting to note the difference between men and women on the monetary value of what they lose. Men price their attachments, personal or material, higher than women.

According to Australian economist Professor Paul Fritjers, losing a partner or a child is like the loss of £350,000 to a man, but only £73,000 to a woman.

Moving house is the equivalent of losing around £9,000 to a man; for a woman it’s like a present of about £1,500, Independent.co.uk reports.  Apparently, moving to a new house would mean leaving memories and emotional imprints in a structure which was once inhabited by both partners and a family.

In exhaustive research involving nearly 10,000 people and taking eight years to complete, Professor Paul Frijters claims that the “monetary value of events such as marriage, moving house and bereavement is dramatically different depending on whether one is a man or a woman.”

“Men are both far more exalted and more depressed by changes in their lives. To an Australian man marriage is worth about £17,000, but to a woman it is worth only half that. Likewise, men are far more affected by divorce”, claims Fritjers.

Does this mean men are more emotional than women?

Freelance writer and senior Psychology student Angela Diggs, says “When it comes to emotion, men process it differently than women. Men are not more emotional than women. Both sexes are just as emotional. However, what separates one from the other is how each deals with them.

Women are the “nurturers” with their natural instinct to love and care for others, while men play the role of “providers”, who support the woman emotionally, financially and spiritually.

From here, it may be safe to assume that because of the “provider” role that men play, the higher is the monetary cost they place on their attachments, as compared to the lesser cost women placed on attachments identified.

In Frijters’research, his team tracked the major life events of his subjects over a period of years and asked them to assign a number between 0 and 10 to their state of mind after important life events and sudden changes in income. This enabled him to put a money value on what he called the “psychic costs” and “psychic benefits” of these changes.
